"This is a small community with a very big heart." -- Toni Cunningham, Good Samaritan Center | "Friends" Group Works to Restore Park and River Areas"Friends of the Waukarusa," a group of about 25 volunteers from the Mount Carroll area, have undertaken the task of restoring scenic Point Rock Park, as well as the old dam and waterfall sites on the Waukarusa River. In the past 10 months, the Friends have restored all the walking trails and two picnic/grill sites in the park and added signs pointing to the trails and at the entrance to the park. In addition, the site of the dam (washed out in the early 1900's) and the old mill race have been cleared. Applications are now being made to government agencies for permission to rebuild the dam. The City, donors, and volunteers also recently funded and installed new playground equipment and a disc golf course. Future plans include planting more trees near the entrance to the park and building a stage for concerts and outdoor weddings. Point Rock Park is bounded by bluffs and the Waukarusa River. One of the main walking trails leads up to the historic Oak Hill Cemetery with graves dating back to the Civil War.and a scenic view of historic downtown Mount Carroll.
