Community leaders look on as TEAM Products owner Dave Johnston breaks ground for expansion of the plant.

TEAM Products Expansion Begins

By JAN VANBUSKIRK

A recent ground-breaking ceremony marked the beginning of a major expansion of the Team Products factory in Mount Carroll.

Owner Dave Johnston will add an 11,000 square foot building northeast of the existing factory building. The expansion will more than double the size of the factory. The company currently employs five full-time and two part-time people. The expansion will create new jobs and bring the total number of full-time employees to 12 or 13, Johnston said.

Team Products, an ISO-9001-2000 certified company, manufactures a wide variety of rubber products and parts including bumpers, gaskets, seals, stops, plugs, caps and covers. Johnston purchased the existing building and started the factory in the fall of 1998.

Vice president of the Mount Carroll Community Development Corporation, Johnston has worked with the organization and city officials for three years to improve the city’s climate for economic development. His plans for expansion helped bring the Whiteside Enterprise Zone to the area along Ill. Rte. 64 this past year. The area is also within a proposed TIF district the city is planning to establish.

Both the Enterprise Zone and the TIF district will make it beneficial for businesses to locate in the area

Johnston has also patiently delayed his plans to help the city try to acquire a $180,000 grant from the Dept. of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. He plans to use the grant initially to purchase equipment. Then the city will be able to use it as a revolving loan for other businesses who qualify.

Johnston has also purchased and rezoned approximately 14 acres east of the factory suitable for other businesses or industry.

During the ground-breaking ceremony last week Johnston said he hopes the expansion of his business will attract some attention and draw other businesses and industries to Mount Carroll.

"Let’s get this show on the road," he said, manning a shovel.

Taking an Alternate Route Brings Couple to Mount Carroll

By PATRICIA ANN MCNAIR

Sometimes the best things that happen to you are the result of nothing more than a happy accident. That’s really how my husband and I ended up finding a home in the lovely city of Mount Carroll, Illinois: a detour that took us on an alternate route, stopping on a whim to look at an open house, finding Jill Bess’s listings page in a real estate guide.

In September 2002 we took a much-needed weekend away from our hectic lives in Chicago. I was just starting my fall semester at Columbia College Chicago, where I am a professor of creative writing. We decided to head toward the Mississippi, an American landmark that has always meant a great deal to us. After a night in a small town motel and a good, greasy breakfast at a country diner, we started our drive back to the city. All along the way, we admired the turn of the century homes in the small communities and along the rural highways—the farmhouses and Victorians, remnants of a time when things were built for beauty, comfort, and permanence. The road we wanted to take to the interstate was closed for repairs, so we stayed on the slower-paced two-lane highway and found ourselves in a tiny town, and when we saw a sign for an open house, we thought “Why not?”
