Campbell Center Expansion Project Gets Support from Manzullo

The effort to secure funding support for the proposed facilities renovation and program expansion project at Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies received a tremendous boost recently with the announcement of a $100,000 grant from 16th District U.S. Congressman Donald Manzullo. These funds would be used to conduct planning, design, feasibility, and economic impact studies on the various elements of the initiative.

Congressman Manzullo is one of a number of legislators representing the area who have expressed strong support for the $18 million project, which would ultimately bring 75-100 permanent jobs in addition to numerous jobs during the renovation process.

Plans for the expanded program offerings include a potential alliance with the National Park Service for on-site and distance learning partnerships, as well as a journeyman training program for tradesmen involved in restoration work. Renovation of the historic buildings on the former Francis Shimer College campus would allow for year-round program offerings, as well as providing Mount Carroll and the surrounding area with dining and lodging facilities.

For more information on this project, contact Laurel Bergren at (815) 244-1091.

Local Manufacturer Plans for Expansion

Dave Johnston, president of TEAM Products, Inc., said his company needs more room, and he's planning to put up a building and hire 12 more people in 2004. Johnston spoke to the Mount Carroll Chamber of Commerce recently. He thanked the mayor, the president of the Community Development Corporation, and a local banker for working hard to get an Enterprise Zone, a CDAP grant for a business revolving loan fund, and other programs going to help current businesses expand and to encourage new businesses to come to Mount Carroll.

"Without these programs, I would stay (in Mount Carroll) because I like it here, but other companies probably won't come. High volume stuff is out. It's going overseas, and the U.S. can't compete. You've got to find a niche. We found our niche. I want the stuff that others can't or won't do," Johnston said.

He also said, "It's tough to start and manage a business." Johnston bought a building with a machine shop in Mount Carroll in 1998 and turned it into a custom rubber products manufacturing facility. "I put a half million dollars into the business before making a part."

When asked why he came to Mount Carroll, Johnston replied, "People like Mount Carroll, and there's a lot of potential in Mount Carroll." He said his company wants to see Mount Carroll flourish, but to do that, "we need jobs to get people to come here. If a factory hires someone, the rest of the family will come."
