Campbell Center Plans Program Expansion & Facilities UpgradeCampbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies is seeking a funding appropriation for planning, feasibility, design, and economic impact studies on an $18.2 million rehabilitation and redevelopment project to create a full-service year-round training and conference center that would bring 75-100 jobs to the area and serve 3,000-5,000 program participants annually. Campbell Center is establishing a partnership with the National Park Service to create a Midwest training center for Park Service personnel. It is also planning to offer certification and journeyman's programs in the conservation and preservation fields. The unique facilities of the campus are underutilized and in need of significant maintenance and rehabilitation to sustain their functionality and historic status. Renovation and revitalization of facilities would enable year-round training to occur rather than just being limited to warmer climate conditions.
| This project would preserve an architectural, cultural treasure in a productive and positive manner, enhancing the current capabilities of the Campbell Center to meet future training and development needs locally and globally.County explores broadband possibilitiesCarroll County leaders are working with several key technology professionals to explore the future needs and delivery capabilities for broadband communications in Carroll County. County Board member John McConnel, Jr. and others have arranged to bring Dr. Andrew Cohill of Design Nine, Inc., Blacksburg, VA, to the county to assess needs and present possible options for broadband development. Dr. Cohill’s visit will be funded through the resources of the Carroll County Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies (CEDS) committee. In a similar initiative, Illinois Rural Partners has targeted the Carroll/Jo Daviess/Whiteside County area for a proposed study that would be conducted by Frank Knott of ViTAL Economy, Riderwood, MD. Research and consumer surveys would be conducted to determine the needs and capacities for broadband communications in the region. If the results were favorable, the area would be considered for a potential pilot project to design and implement broadband services. The three counties have been asked to commit financially to facilitate the pilot project, with Rural Partners picking up about 80% of the cost. Consideration of this opportunity by the three counties is currently underway. Mount Carroll CDC board members John Swiech, Nancy Gable, Jim Lawson, and Bruce Johnson attended the May 27th informational meeting on this project.
