"This is a small community with a very big heart." -- Toni Cunningham, Good Samaritan Center |
With a 30-1 season record, the Mount Carroll boys' basketball team competed in the championship game of the IHSA Class A State Tournament March 15 in Peoria. The team fought back from a 2-19 first quarter deficit against Chicago's Franciscan Hales to take the lead in the fourth quarter at 46-45 with 5:31 left. Unable to hold the lead, however, the Hawks, ranked second in the state, had to settle for second place with a 53-58 loss. The team's fans made up the largest following in Class A history at Peoria and was awarded the Sportsmanship Award for the tournament. For tournament details, go to the IHSA tournament page. First Impression Brings Family to Mount Carroll"It was a beautiful, late spring day in May. The sun was rising, lighting the town in that early morning golden light. We stopped to have breakfast at a little café across the street from the County Courthouse... I fell in love with this place during the first hour of the first time I had ever been here." Those are the words of Mount Carroll resident and County Board member John McConnel, Jr., who moved his family here about seven years ago. McConnel's full story is available on the Mount Carroll Web site. He has never regretted his decision and says, "The people are even better than my first impression, making us feel welcome and a real part of the community." |
